The home of the butterbeep hive mind - poetry, writing, music, media and code

the chaos of life

Today I am ill, have just got back from the doctor and been prescribed a second course of domperidone for a strange gastric issue. Life is indeed mysterious. It’s a beautiful day, and as I look after my children and scan my feeds and streams, I am struck by two extremes, which meet in a space of perfect poignancy.

Number one is the G20 and associated protests, and I am mesmerised by the random violence and ignorance of the more extreme protestors - urinating in the banks, smashing the windows of the RBS (why is this ironic?). This kind of thing doesn’t work, it never has. Why don’t we just focus on the grass roots and make the changes locally, step by step, without demolishing our position with primate stupidity?

In the middle, I am enthralled to see mention of my fellow media warriors in the press - @documentally on the BBC website, as well as @lloyddavis. The model is changing, let’s ensure we do it with honour and care.

And sat at home awaiting the birth of his baby, @documentally, reflecting on the events in London and waxing philsophical about the kind of world his child is about to be born into.

A time for reflection in the midst of chaos? Absolutely. The media model is changing, melting before our eyes, and we have the opportunity to move fast, like lightning, ahead of the curve. Let’s just make sure we protect the truth and learn some lessons from the best of the old school - objectivity, transparency and integrity.

That would be a ‘social’ media revolution I would be proud to throw myself into.
